Details are beginning to emerge about the fatal shooting of a young Port Arthur mother that police are calling cowardly.

By 2:30 a.m. Sunday a party in the 1100 block of Vicksburg was winding down with only a few people standing outside visiting.

Jasmine Newman, 22, the mother of two young children was one of the party-goers — an innocent bystander that was shot to death in what police are calling a cowardly act.

Port Arthur Police Det. Mike Hebert called it an ambush.

Officers haven’t said whether the shooter or shooters were on foot or in a vehicle when the shooting happened.

“The suspect was in very close proximity to the people at the house when they opened fire,” Hebert said. “She was innocent. She had nothing to do with any criminal organization. She was not involved in a gang. She was the mother of two who went to a party and was shot. It’s an unbelievably cowardly act.”

The motive for the shooting is unknown.

“Why would you shoot into a crowd with no gang affiliation? Just a bunch of friends standing around and being shot at,” Hebert said.

Newman did not live at the house where the shooting occurred.

Three other people at the party were also shot but police said they were all treated and released from the hospital.

Hebert said detectives are trying to look at all aspects of the crime and it is too early to come to a conclusion on motive.

Anyone with information on the shooting death is asked to call PAPD at 409-983-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 409-833-TIPS.
