County Commissioner’s change meeting times

BEAUMONT — The Jefferson County Commissioner’s Court has moved its meeting times from 1:30 p.m. Mondays to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays.

Meetings are still taking place in the Jefferson County Commissioner’s Courtroom in Beaumont.

Commissioner Brent Weaver, Precinct 2, said there was no specific reason for the adjustment. It was just an opportunity to change things up.

“Around the state there are commissioners who meet on Tuesdays,” he said. “A lot of the time we have members who don’t attend, not because they don’t want to but because they are away or can’t make it in the middle of the afternoon.”

Weaver said meetings have been scheduled on Mondays as long as he can remember, but sees the benefits in the change.

“Changing it gives another opportunity for people to attend,” he said. “Moving it to Tuesdays gives people time for coming in, looking at their backups before the Tuesday meetings and getting things together. I’ve had constituents who are out of town on Mondays because of a long weekend. It may provide more opportunity for more people. I wasn’t opposed to it. It’s just a different day of the week and time. As long as we meet, it doesn’t really matter when.”

Weaver said only time would tell if the adjustment brings in more community involvement.

Commissioner Michael Sinegal, Precinct 3, has been an advocate of changing the meetings from the get go.

“If you came in from a vacation or just a busy weekend you were scrambling to keep up with everything,” he said. “Finally the court and the judge said yes. That gives us Mondays to prepare. We all agreed. Tuesday will give us that leeway between Sunday and Monday to get information, ask questions or see if we want to table an item after discussion.”

The vote to change the meeting times was unanimous. The court is holding its first commissioners meeting since the change on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
