A phone video of Erving announcing his appearance was played on the videoboard at Thursday’s football season opener between Lamar and Tennessee’ Bethel University and was tweeted during the game as well. A Lamar athletics spokesperson said details on the event, including ticket information and location, will be posted at lamarcardinals.com during the next week.

Erving played 16 seasons in the American and National Basketball Associations, including the last 11 with the Philadelphia 76ers following the ABA’s 1976 merger into the NBA. Known for his artistry on the court, the four-time MVP played in four NBA Finals series, winning his lone championship in 1983.

Erving averaged 24.2 points and shot 50.6% from the floor in his pro career.
