GOLF: Indians, Bulldogs unable to rally in 5A Region III

Positives were once again few and far between for Mid-County golfers as the 5A Region III championship came to a close Thursday at La Torretta Resort and Spa with little in the way of highlights for players from Port Neches-Groves or Nederland.

PNG did reclaim bragging rights the Bulldogs seized by snapping its string of nine consecutive district titles, but there wasn’t much resistance. With District 21-5A champion Brendan Marley shooting a second consecutive 87, Nederland’s low round of regional was Jadon Bell’s closing 83.

While Nederland’s team total went up from 346 to 355, PNG lowered its first-day total from 340 to 334. A 36-hole score of 674 left the Indians seventh out of 14 teams, 52 strokes behind champion Montgomery’s 622 and 35 behind the third place finish necessary to qualify for state.

Once again only one Mid-County player broke 80. The Indians’ Tim Feemster, a year after qualifying for state, shot a 78 for a 161. Bryce Parsley was the low PNG player at 160, after backing up his opening round 77 with an 83.

Parsley was five strokes away from qualifying for state as an individual.

PNG’s other scores that counted Thursday were an 84 by Paul Muse (171 total) and an 89 by Vic Aponte (183 total). Dalton Shields, whose score counted on Wednesday, finished up with a 95 for 187.

Jason Adams, who qualified for regional as an individual, posted a 92 for 176.

“By PNG standards it was not a great finish to the year these last three weeks,” said first-year coach Jerry Honza. “But I am proud of the effort and determination. The work for next season starts tomorrow.”

For Nederland, which finished ninth, Jadon Bell closed with an 83 for 167. Marley wound up at 174, Tyler Wallie had an 88 for 178 and Daniel Cormier was at 182 after a final round 97.

In the 4A regional at Raven’s Nest in Huntsville, Little Cypress-Mauriceville sophomore Jack Burke claimed medalist honors with a 147 (72-75). Burke won by six strokes and carried his team, which had only one other player in the top 35, to third place and a trip to state.

Huffman was first at 649. Gatesville finished second at 673, with LCM third at 686. One other area player will be headed to state, with Hardin-Jefferson’s Brody Jeanes earning a spot as an individual after shooting 158.
