PREP ROUNDUP: Indians hand Eagles first district loss

Three runs in the third inning turned out to be all Port Neches-Groves needed to hand Barbers Hill its first District 21-5A baseball loss, 3-2, at The Reservation on Tuesday.

The loss ended a 10-game winning streak for the Eagles. Nederland moved into sole possession of first place in the district with a no-hit win over Memorial.

For PNG (14-11-1, 7-2 in 21-5A), the win is the highlight of a seven-game winning streak and pulls the Indians within a game of both Nederland and Barbers Hill.

Grant Rogers struck out six and scattered five hits over six innings for the win. Carson Roccaforte struck out the Barbers Hill side in order in the seventh inning to earn the save.

PNG loaded the bases with no outs on a Reece Mancera walk and singles by Reid Porter and Cade Billeaud. Roccaforte hit a sacrifice fly to push across one run, and with two outs, Ryan Sosa singled to drive in two scores.

Sosa batted 2 for 3, while Austin Schaper also had a single for the Indians. Cameron Cauley was 2 for 3 to lead the Eagles (17-6-2, 8-1).

A run each in the fourth and fifth innings for Barbers Hill ended a 42-inning scoreless streak for the PNG defense.

 

Nederland 5, Memorial 1

In Nederland, Noah Gregory and Jacob Mares each struck out seven and combined for a no-hitter against the Titans (5-11, 2-7).

Gregory threw four innings and walked six, but gave up an unearned run. Mares left Memorial hitless for the final three innings.

Rene Cunningham went 2 for 4 with a triple. He drove in a run and batted in a nother.

Corbin Chandler was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Adam Roccaforte, Omar Mascorro, Brock Holton and Wade Butler (two RBI) accounted for the Bulldogs’ other hits.

A passed ball resulted in Memorial’s lone run in the top of the first. Miguel Samudio was hit by a pitch with two outs, but advanced to second on an Adler Kithler walk and reached third and home plate on passed balls.

 

Bridge City 10, Hardin-Jefferson 2

In Sour Lake, Peyton Havard struck out 10, Logan Hamm and Jackson Tims each had three hits, and the Cardinals (18-6-2, 9-1 in 22-4A) remained atop the district with a win.

Cameron Yadon, who went 0 for 1, Cace Skinner (1 for 2) and Hamm each batted in two runs. Tanner Wilson and Kade Benoit had the other hits for the Cardinals.

Havard allowed one earned run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Ryan Ellis struck out one in one-third inning.

Landon McLeod went 2 for 4 to lead Hardin-Jefferson.

 

SOFTBALL

PNG 17, Vidor 0

Senior night at PNG didn’t last very long, but the Indians (18-9, 7-5 in 21-5A) likely didn’t mind.

Maylin Louvier’s walk-off home run in the fourth inning completed a perfect game for pitcher Cameron Niedenthal. PNG scored five runs in the first, six in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth.

Louvier batted 3 for 4 with six RBI and scored three runs of her own. Sydnee Adams and Bayja Newby each went 3 for 3, as Adams scored four runs and stole two bases, and Newby touched home plate twice and drove in four.

Niedenthal went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk. Madeleine Cormier was 1 for 1 with a double and two RBI.

PNG finished third in District 21-5A and has not yet released playoff information.
