PREP ROUNDUP: Indians clinch 21-5A boys soccer title

A night that could been another team’s crowning moment belonged to Port Neches-Groves’ boys soccer team.

Jason Lovejoy pulled a hat trick in PNG’s 4-0 win at Vidor on Friday. That, along with Memorial’s shootout win over Dayton, gave the Indians (17-7-2, 9-2-1 in 21-5A) the District 21-5A title with 29 district points.

Dayton (18-4-5, 9-2-1) ended up with 28 after a shootout loss at Memorial on Friday following a 3-3 tie earned the Broncos one point. Cleveland (17-6-1, 8-4) finished third in the district with 24 and Memorial (6-9-4, 6-4-2) had 22.

Grant Pearson scored the other goal for PNG. Marlon Sandoval, Sergio Aguilar, Mario Oceguera and Lovejoy each had an assist.

Vidor (1-16, 1-11) finished the season with three points.

Playoff matchups have not yet been announced. The 5A bi-district round will be held between March 28-30.

TRACK
Titans win Charger Relays

Memorial’s boys track and field team won the Charger Relays in League City with 116 points, 20 ahead of host Clear Springs.

Memorial won two events. The 4×200-meter relay team of Alex Ned, Tyrence Augusta, James Ward and Micheal Odoms ran 1:27.71 to win that race, and Lamont Freeman turned in a 1:59.45 times for gold in the 800 meters and was third in the 400-meter dash at 50.08 seconds.

The Titans continued their success in the relays with second place in the 4×100 (42.83 seconds) and third in the 4×400 (3:21.05).

Ned was busy for the Titans with third place in the 300-meter hurdles and triple jump and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. Fabian Garcia earned fourth place in the 300 hurdles.

Harold Mosley of Memorial came in second in the latter at 15.23 seconds, and Ward too second in the 200 dash at 22.18.

Fellow Titans Kristopher Ross came in second in the shot put his 49-foot, 9-inch through beating teammate Tre’Vante Caines by an inch.

Nederland’s team came in 15th with eight points. Beaumont United (20) and West Brook (19) were ninth and 11th, respectively.

In girls competition, freshman Ke’Asia Hall earned third place in the triple jump with a 35-foot attempt, leading Nederland to a 14th-place finish in team standings with 8.7 points. West Brook was 11th with 10 and Memorial was 15th with 7.

GIRLS SOCCER
PNG 4, Vidor 1

In Port Neches, Ariel Muller scored twice, and the Indians (16-5-5, 9-2-1 in 21-5A) secured second place with a three-goal victory.

Kaylee Landry and Tori Cutright netted the other PNG goals.

Grace Richard assisted on two goals.

“We played with a lot of fire tonight and really took it to them,” PNG coach Aimee Bates said. “The girls really wanted this one.”

Bates also cited the defense of Halley Smith.

Nederland, PNG, Vidor and Memorial have qualified for the UIL playoffs out of 21-5A.

Also Friday: Dayton defeated Memorial 4-0.

BASEBALL
Bridge City 4, Lumberton 0

In Bridge City, Peyton Havard was nearly unhittable.

Havard struck out 17 and held the Raiders to one hit in a complete-game win Friday night.

Bridge City (12-5-2, 3-1 in 22-4A) had a hit each from six players. Sam Carpenter homered, Logan Hamm doubled, and Slade Foreman, Tanner Wilson, Jackson Tims and Havard all singled.

Trent Myers got the lone hit for the Raiders.

Bridge City will host Nederland on Tuesday.

Hardin-Jefferson 11, Hamshire-Fannett 3
In Hamshire, five errors plagued the Longhorns (8-10, 2-2 in 21-5A) in a loss to the Hawks.

The loss spoiled a 2-for-3 outing for Kyle Saurage. Jacob Garza, Taylor Roggenkamp, Evan Viator and Carlson Freeman each had a hit for H-F as well.

SOFTBALL
Nederland 10, St. Agnes 0

In Nederland, Brittany Taylor and Lexi Eversole both batted 3 for 3, Destini Trahan went 3 for 4, and Nederland (16-11) took its off-date in District 21-5A play to rout Houston St. Agnes Academy in five innings.

Taylor drove in three runs. Harlee Brown and Eversole batted in two each, and Allison Sorensen and Trahan each knocked in one.

The offense backed up an eight-strikeout, one-hit gem by Trahan in four innings. Sierra Wiltz threw a perfect fifth inning.

Nederland will resume action Tuesday at home against Memorial.

PNG 8, Vidor 1
In Vidor, Taylor Dominguez doubled and scored two runs as the Indians (15-6, 4-2 in 21-5A) routed the Pirates 8-1.

Dominguez went 3 for 4, while Sydnee Adams (two RBI, stolen base) and Maylin Louvier (triple, double) each went 2 for 4. Adams and Louvier each scored a run.

Madeleine Cormier also doubled in the win.

PNG will go into an off-date before visiting Cleveland on March 29.
