SOFTBALL: Lamar swept on day 2 at FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Lamar softball team was swept on the second day of the FGCU Invitational hosted by Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday. Lamar was defeated 8-5 by Florida International before dropping the second game, 3-0, to Memphis.

After keeping the Panthers off the board in the top of the first inning, the broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame. Kelly Meeuwsen struck out but reached as FIU’s pitcher threw a wild pitch. She went to second on a ground out and scored when Jade Lewis doubled to center field putting LU ahead, 1-0.

Florida International answered back by scoring one in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, the Panthers scored one on a Cardinals error. Follow in the error, LU shut the door and the game was tied at 1-1 after two innings.

Lamar took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Lewis hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored one putting, LU ahead 2-1. Shaina Amir followed with a double down the left field line scoring the third run of the game for LU. Taylor Murphy followed with a single that plated two putting the Cards ahead, 5-1.

The game remained in 5-1 in favor of the Cardinals until the top of the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, the Panthers bats came to life as they scored seven runs on seven hits and left one runner on base. After 5 1/2 innings of play, LU trailed FIU, 8-5.

Lamar could not get anything going in their final two at-bats and dropped its first game of the day, 8-5, to Florida International.

Pitching dominated the contest between the Cards and Tigers really in the contest. Through two and a half innings of play both teams combined for one hit in the contest.

The Tigers broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the third. Davidson hit a double down the left field line to get Memphis started. Jade Lewis settled down and got the next two hitters out. However, Smith followed with a triple, which scored Davidson putting Memphis ahead, 1-0.

Memphis grew the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. With a runner on second and two outs, Santiago singled putting runners on the corners for the Tigers. Davidson followed with a single that scored one. D. Smith came up and singled to left field scoring the second run. After four innings of play, LU trailed, 3-0.

Lamar got its first it in the top of the fifth inning when Kelly Meeuwsen singled to right field. However, LU could not get anything going in the frame. Shannon Klaus singled to lead off the Cards in the top of the sixth and then stole second and third base. However, she would be left stranded on base.

Lamar tallied one more hit in the contest, as Taylor Davis singled with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Lamar could not get anything else going and were defeated, 3-0, to Memphis.

The Cards return to action on Sunday when they conclude the FGCU Invitational by playing host Florida Gulf Coast at 9 a.m. CT at the FGCU Softball Complex.
