With one day left to sign up for the Port Arthur mayor’s race, the field appeared to be the same as it was a month ago.
Candidates include incumbent Derrick Freeman, former City Councilman Willie “Bae” Lewis, former Justice of the Peace Thurman Bartie, Port Acres citizen-activist Chuck Vincent and Lowra Harrison, an environmental specialist and minister.
All five entered the race shortly after qualifying began Jan. 15. Friday is the last day to sign up.
The city secretary’s office confirmed Thursday afternoon that no other candidates had signed up for the race — yet.
Freeman, a local businessman, is seeking a second, consecutive term after replacing former Mayor Deloris “Bobbie” Prince.
Lewis’ seat was one of nine on the City Council until voters eliminated two positions last year.
Bartie announced his candidacy the day before qualifying opened and signed up on Day No. 1. He has not held office since resigning his JP position under duress. He’d been disciplined for his deportment on the bench, but said he’s learned how to better serve in public office since then. He says he will be a “transformational” leader and help unify the city.
Harrison has run before, in 2013. She polled just about 2 percent of the vote then, but said she was caring for her mother, who was ill, and was not able to devote all of her time to running.
Vincent is scheduled to appear on The Port Arthur News’ weekly Facebook Live program for newsmaker at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 21. He spoke last week at a public meeting in Sabine Pass where drainage issues were discussed.
