Senior running back Darwin Barlow, junior defensive lineman James Sylvester and coach W.T. Johnston, all from Newton, won the Texas Sports Writers Association’s 3A football superlative awards, the TSWA announced Wednesday.

Barlow ran for 2,348 yards and 42 touchdowns en route to offensive player of the year honors. Sylvester was voted defensive player of the year after making 100 tackles (17 for losses) and recovering four fumbles.

Johnston received the coach of the year honor after leading the Eagles to a second straight 3A Division II state championship while battling complications from graft-vs.-host disease following a 2015 double-lung transplant.
