SOFTBALL: Cards pick up first win at Scrap Yard

CONROE — The Lamar softball team split a pair of games on day two of the Scrap Yard Tournament.
LU opened the day with a 7-5 victory over Omaha before closing out the day by falling to Nebraska, 6-4. With the victory over Omaha, head coach Amy Hooks picked up her first collegiate head coaching victory.
Lamar 7, Omaha 5
The Mavericks struck first as they scored one run on a Cards wild pitch in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first, LU struck back. Savana Guidry singled and went to second on a passed ball. She moved to third on a Mavs error. Taylor Davis singled through the left side, which scored Guidry tying the game at 1-1.
After the Cards set Omaha down in order in the top of the second, Lamar came back up and the offense scored another run. Maddy Myers walked and moved over to second on a sac bunt. With two outs and two on, Guidry singled to center field scoring one and putting the Cardinals ahead 2-1.
Omaha struck back taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning. White hit a leadoff home run to center field for the first run and later in the inning, score the second run on a Fisher single.
The game remained in favor of the Mavericks until the bottom of the sixth inning. After the first two batters were retired, Lauryn McMahon got the Cards started with a single to right field. Alicia DeLeon was hit by a pitch, putting two on. Guidry stayed hot at the plate in the contest as she singled down the left field line scoring one for LU and tying the game at 3-3.
After a wild pitch by Omaha moved DeLeon and Guidry moved up a base, Omaha walked Shannon Klaus loading the bases. LU scored two more on a Mavs error putting LU ahead 5-3. Davis followed with a single through the left side that scored two more and Lamar led 7-3 heading to the top of the seventh inning.
Needing three outs for the first win of the season, Omaha would not go down without a fight. The first two Mavericks reach on a hit and Emma Dargy walked to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout put the first out on the board, Janae Cameron singled one home for Omaha cutting the lead down to 7-4. Omaha scored one on the next play as White flew into a double play, but a run scored before the last out. Lamar came away with a 7-5 victory over Omaha.
Jade Lewis, who came in relief for the Cards picked up the win for LU.
Nebraska 6, Lamar 4
With one out, in the top of the first, Klaus singled to third base for the Cardinals. She than stole second base, however, she would be left stranded on base as the next two Cards were retired.
Nebraska struck in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff walk and a sac bunt moved Simmons to second base. She came into score on a Cardinals error and LU trailed 1-0 after the first inning.
The Cards tied the game in the top of the second inning. Maddy Myers doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a sac bunt. She scored on a Huskers throwing error. LU could only score one in the frame. In the bottom of the second, the Huskers could not get anything going as Julia Voluntad got the leadoff hitter to pop out and struck two out to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Nebraska scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning taking a 3-1 lead over LU. The Huskers scored two runs on two hits and took advantage of three Cards errors.
Lamar answered back in the top of the fourth with one run. With two outs, Kelly Meeuwsen hit a home run putting the Cards down one, 3-2. In the bottom of the frame, The Cards only allowed one hit and kept the Huskers off the board and trialed 3-2 after four innings of play.
After the Cards went down in order in the fifth, Nebraska extended its lead to 6-2. The Huskers scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame taking the 6-2 lead over LU.
In the top of the sixth, the Cards started a rally with one out. Lewis singled to center field to get the offense started. Davis followed with a single down the left field line putting two on. After the second out of the inning, Meeuwsen doubled, which scored two for LU. On the play, Meeuwsen went to third base on an error. However, she could not score and heading to the bottom of the inning, LU trailed 6-4.
After keeping the Huskers off the board in the bottom of the sixth, the Cards came up to bat in the top of the seventh. Lamar could not get anything going in the top of the seventh and were defeated by Nebraska, 6-4.
The Cards to action on Sunday when they conclude the Scrap Yard Tournament. They play Texas Tech at 11 a.m. and Wisconsin at 1 p.m. The games are being played at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex.
