Beaumont man dies on China roadway

A Beaumont man was killed Wednesday night when his body, lying in the roadway on South Broadway in China, south of U.S. 90, was struck by a vehicle.

The Department of Public Safety said in an issued statement that the driver of a northbound Hyundai was unable to stop his vehicle from hitting the pedestrian, who was in a curled position and resting in the roadway.

DPS was notified of the collision around 7:30 p.m.

Initial reports indicate that a 2004 Hyundai passenger vehicle was traveling northbound on South Broadway when his passenger observed something lying in the roadway. The driver slammed on his brakes, but could not avoid striking the object in the roadway, which was a person.

Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson pronounced the pedestrian, 66, dead at the scene.

The driver, 39, of Beaumont, and his passenger were not injured.
