A local civic and social organization is looking to motivate children to read, knowing that knowledge is power. But first they need to put some books into the children’s hands.

Sisters With Amazing Grace, or S.W.A.G., will hold a book drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays in February; Feb. 2, Feb. 9 and Feb. 23 at the Port Arthur American Little League Baseball Field concession stand, which is across from St. Mary Hospital.

Jada Fobbs with S.W.A.G. said they seeking books for ages 5 to 13.

“It really hit me with my grandson,” Fobbs said. “I went to the school and found out he was not reading on his grade level.”

Fobbs said the organization has been trying to present Reading With S.W.A.G. for two years. But their efforts were interrupted by Hurricane and Tropical Storm Harvey in 2017; in 2018, people were still in recovery mode.

Once the books are collected they will be presented to children in a special event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 16 at the Little League field.

Monetary donations will also be accepted.

Currently the group has about 80 books but hopes to get 100 to 200 more.

“We’d like every child to leave with a book,” she said.
