BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Indians win Silver final at East Chambers

Port Neches-Groves defeated Hallettsville for the second time in the East Chambers Holiday Classic, and it earned the Indians the Silver bracket championship.

The Indians controlled the glass and got 24 points from Mollee Priddy on Saturday in a 66-46 victory. Chelsea Carrillo had 15 points and 15 rebounds, more than a third of the Indians’ total on the glass, and Priddy also had seven boards.

Holly Jones collected eight rebounds to go with six points. Kandice Comeaux had five steals, three assists and four rebounds to go with 12 points.

PNG (15-8) will resume District 21-5A action in Port Arthur against Memorial on Friday.

 

PNG 49, Broaddus 22

PNG turned its defense into offense early and built a 36-22 halftime lead en route to a trip to the Silver bracket final against Hallettsville.

Maylin Stampley had five steals to go with 16 points, Chelsea Carrillo blocked two shots and totaled six points and six rebounds, and Mollee Priddy dropped 13 points for PNG, which had 18 steals and 14 deflections as a team.

 

Spring DeKaney 59, Memorial 45

On Saturday at the Gulf Coast Classic at Barbers Hill, DeKaney outscored Memorial (8-10) 16-10 in the fourth quarter and used balanced scoring to stave off the Titans.

Julia Sion (16 points) and Jacqualyn Gibbs (seven) accounted for all 10 of Memorial’s fourth-quarter points. Dennisha Anderson had 11 points in the loss.

Hannah Smith and Saij Fluker each scored 16 points and Amanda Ferry had 10 for Dekaney, which led 29-26 at halftime.

 

Memorial 61, Lumberton 50 (Fri.)

At Barbers Hill, Sion scored 17 of her game-high 24 points in the second half, and the Memorial Titans used four double-digit scorers in taking a 61-50 victory over the Lumberton Raiders on Friday.

Sion had six of the Titans’ 13 first-period points but was held to a free throw before halftime.

Gibbs had 13 points, and Miller and Anderson each scored 10 points for the Titans. Ivy Le led Lumberton, a former District 22-5A rival of Memorial, with 16 points, and Audrey Postula added 15.

 

Fort Bend Dulles 59, Memorial 29 (Fri.)

Earlier Friday, Miller shot 4 for 5 from the floor and finished with eight points, but the Titans had no answer for the Vikings in the Gulf Coast Classic.

 

Memorial 35, Pasadena Dobie 34 (Thu.)

Following a 52-27 loss to Alief Taylor to start the Barbers Hill tournament, Memorial held off the Longhorns in the end to pick up the win.

Anderson and Gibbs each scored eight points, and Miller had seven for Memorial.

 

Bridge City 63, Tarkington 30

In the East Chambers Holiday Classic, Kyndall Harrison’s 18 points led the Cardinals into the Gold bracket.

The Cards are 3-1 in the tournament after beating Liberty 47-36 (behind Hannah Wiegreffe’s 14 points) and Broaddus 54-32 (behind Reesie Ryder’s 10) and losing to East Chambers 55-36.

 

Tomball 60, PNG 45

In the East Chambers Holiday Classic, the Indians (13-8) found themselves in a big hole and never got out of it despite outscoring the Cougars 29-22 in the second half.

Priddy scored 15 points and Kandice Comeaux had eight points for the Indians.

 

PNG 56, Huffman 53

PNG started Friday right thanks to Chelsea Carrillo’s 26 points, five steals and six rebounds in a three-point win.

The Indians outscored the Falcons 23-16 in the final 8 minutes, taking advantage of the free throw line. Stampley added nine points and two steals and Comeaux had eight points and three boards in the victory,

 

PNG 54, Hallettsville 46 (Thu.)

At East Chambers, the Indians had three players finish in double-digit scoring, led by Priddy’s 18 points and five rebounds.

Stampley dropped 17 points and Carrillo had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Julissa Gomez grabbed nine rebounds to go with two points.

 

LCM 44, PNG 42

The Indians started the East Chambers Holiday Classic letting a 39-28 lead after three quarters slip away.

Stampley (17 points, nine rebounds), Priddy (16 points, seven rebounds) and Carrillo (six points, eight rebounds) made up nearly 89 percent of the PNG offense.

 

BOYS

PNG 42, Orangefield 37

In the Bridge City Cardinal Classic, the Bobcats held a 19-5 first-quarter lead, only to score 18 points the rest of the way.

Trent Lee finished with 19 points, and the Indians turned the game around in the second half to come away victorious. Noah Marchak had 10 points, and Jackson Simmons pulled down 12 rebounds in the win.

 

PNG 60, Sabine Pass 29

In Bridge City, Marchak and Lee still had hot hands and nearly combined for half of the Indians’ points in a rout of the Sharks.

PNG (11-8) had a much faster start with 21-12 first-quarter lead and nearly shut out Sabine Pass in the second quarter.

Harold James had 15 points to lead the Sharks.
