BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Carrillo controls glass in Indians’ rout

Chelsea Carrillo introduced herself to District 21-5A basketball by nearly grabbing 20 rebounds.

Carrillo had a game-high 18 points and added to that 19 rebounds Friday in leading host Port Neches-Groves to a 61-29 win over Cleveland. Carrillo’s “excellent post play,” as PNG coach Kara Skinner described, added to the Indians’ staunch defensive effort in which they made 25 steals and deflected 24 passes.

Mollee Priddy, Maylin Stampley and Julissa Gomez led the defensive charge with four steals each. Priddy scored 12 points and had four rebounds and four assists. Stampley scored 14 points. Gomez had four points but also seven deflections.

PNG (11-6, 1-0) will host Dayton on Tuesday.

 

Bridge City 30, West Orange-Stark 10

In Bridge City, a 7-0 first-quarter shutout for the Cardinals (14-4, 1-0) helped them successfully open District 22-4A play against their inner-country rivals.

Ananiah Hicks had eight points and Rylee Oceguera scored seven for the Cards. Madison Fischer totaled 14 rebounds.

Bridge City will host Silsbee on Tuesday.
