SOCCER: Lamar favored to repeat as Southland regular-season champ

Southland Conference head coaches and sports information specialists for soccer have predicted Lamar will repeat as regular-season conference champions.

The Cardinals received 20 first-place votes out of 24 overall and earned 240 voting points to top the Southland’s annual preseason poll. They won the regular-season and conference tournament championships a year ago, the latter being the first in Lamar’s soccer history.

In 2016, Lamar was 1-7-3 in the Southland.

Second- through 12th-place predictions are, in order: Stephen F. Austin (two first-place votes) with 212 points, Abilene Christian (two) with 182, Central Arkansas with 172, McNeese State with 169, Houston Baptist with 161, Sam Houston State with 124, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with 102, Southeastern Louisiana with 85, Northwestern State with 61, Nicholls State with 41, Incarnate Word 35.

Lamar won a home exhibition over Rice, 3-2, Wednesday and will begin its season in Beaumont against Grambling State on Aug. 17.
