For the first time in Jefferson County history, a woman has been convicted of sexual assault of another woman.

On Wednesday, Jefferson County District Attorney Bob Wortham announced that Rachel Marie Green, 29, was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault by a Jefferson County jury.

The case was investigated by the Special Victim’s Unit of the Beaumont Police Department, according to a press release from the DA’s office.

Detective Darrell Lebeouf began the investigation on Aug. 23, 2016, and learned that the sexual assault had occurred on July 30, 2016. The investigation revealed that Green attended a house party with the victim and other friends in Beaumont. At the party, the defendant forcibly raped the 35-year-old victim.

The trial went quickly, with the jury picked on Monday and testimony beginning on Tuesday. A verdict was reached Tuesday afternoon and the sentencing phase was handed down on Wednesday.

Assistant criminal district attorneys Amy E. Tomlinson and Kim Pipkin prosecuted the case.

Pipkin said there have been other similar cases but this is the first one to go to trial in the county.

Pipkin hopes the case sets an example and shows victims should come forward about sexual assault, which is widely underreported. She said the DA’s office would stand behind the victims of sexual assault, fight for them and support them.

Misty Craver, director of the Victim’s Advocacy Center, served as an expert witness for the State. The offense is a second-degree felony and carries a range of punishment of 2 to 20 years and a fine of up to $10,000. Green was eligible for probation since she had no felony convictions on her record.

The jury sentenced Green to a term of 3 years in prison and probated the sentence for a period of ten years. Green must register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.
