The search for a new police chief for Port Arthur continues as the folks at City Hall wait for requested information.

Port Arthur Interim City Manager Harvey Robinson said as of Wednesday he had not received the information he had requested related to the four finalists. He had hoped to have the information in order to make a recommendation at the July 31 City Council meeting but that was not the case.

Robinson and two others in city hall are on a committee to interview the candidates for the position. The Port Arthur News filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the city July 19 for the names of the committee members. Those names were released Wednesday and include Robinson, assistant city manager Becky Underhill and assistant city manager/director of development services Ron Burton.

The four finalists include Deputy Chief Martin “Bubba” Blitch, Drug Enforcement Administration Supervisory Special Agent Tim Duriso, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Commander John Leger and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Warrant Officer Alton Baise.

Of the four, Blitch is still an employee with the PAPD and the others have worked there in the past.

The to-be-named chief will replace Patrick Melvin, who resigned his post abruptly May 18 after less than two years with the department.

Applications for the post began May 24 and ended June 15.
