BOYS BASKETBALL: Titans presented championship rings

One last jewel to commemorate Memorial’s UIL 5A state championship in boys basketball has come in.

The 2017-18 Titans received their championship rings during the Port Arthur ISD’s Convocation on Wednesday in their home gymnasium. The diamond-studded ring (exact count unknown) came almost five months after the Titans beat Justin Northwest 75-69 for the school’s first team state championship and the district’s first since Lincoln won the 1995 4A title.

The crust of the ring includes the letters “PA” with a red stone underneath it. For the past two seasons, Memorial has worn jerseys with the words “Port Arthur” on it as a way to unite all Port Arthur ISD alumni and the city.

One side of the ring has the phrase “We Believe.” Assistant coach Antonio Cooper said that represents the Titans buying into the belief that they were good enough to win the championship.

Memorial finished 34-5, earning the most wins in school history. Three seniors, 5A state tournament MVP Darion Chatman, Jamyus Jones and Thailan Wesley, will play together at Lamar State College Port Arthur.
