Overturned 18-wheeler might be leaking hazardous material

update: The leak from the overturned 18-wheeler has been contained.

All traffic lanes on Smith Road remain closed which includes all Smith Road exit ramps from Interstate 10, the Department of Public Safety said.  Roadways will remain closed while crews safely unload the remaining contents of the tanker and remove the wrecked 18-wheeler.

State Troopers have responded to an overturned commercial motor vehicle on Smith Road in Jefferson County, near its intersection with Interstate 10.

In an issued statement, the Department of Public Safety said that at about 10:45 a.m. Sunday, DPS received a report of the accident in which an 18-wheeler was said to be possibly leaking a hazardous material.

Troopers and other emergency personnel were on the scene, DPS said; however, specific details were unavailable at this time. A HazMat team was en route.

There were no reported injuries.

All traffic lanes on Smith Road were closed while emergency workers were determining if the substance leaking from the 18-wheeler was a hazardous material. Smith Road exit ramps from Interstate10 were also closed as a precaution.

Motorists were urged to find an alternate travel route and to expect delays.
