BASEBALL: Rays draft Kelly grad Proctor

The Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday picked Kelly graduate and Rice junior shortstop Ford Proctor in the third round (92nd overall) of the Major League Baseball draft.

Proctor, of Beaumont, was named All-Conference USA First Team and made the C-USA Academic Honor Roll this season. He was 38th among Division I players with 82 base hits when Rice’s season ended on May 26, and he led the team in hits, batting average (.346), home runs (eight), total bases (122), slugging percentage (.515) and on-base percentage (.431). His 45 RBI, 14 doubles and five sacrifice flies also shared the team lead.

Proctor also started 184 of 185 games played at Rice, sporting a .331 career batting average with 15 career home runs, 133 hits and 124 RBI.
