NEDERLAND — Nederland Police are stepping up their presence at district schools after an unfounded rumor of a threat to C.O. Wilson Middle School.

Assistant police chief Gary Porter said on Monday there was a rumor that a C.O. Wilson Middle School student made a threat to “shoot up the school.” Officers were unable to confirm the rumor that was reportedly made on Snapchat.

“We talked to numerous students and the student who supposedly made the threat,” Porter said. “We will be vigilant around all Nederland schools until school is out due to this being the end of the school year and because of the Santa Fe shooting.”

Porter said if the public sees extra officers around the schools it doesn’t mean anything is actively going on, they are there spending time with the students.

The alleged threat in Nederland was reported around 4:40 p.m. Monday— just days after a deadly shooting at a Santa Fe school which is within 100 miles or so from this area.
