ALVIN – Lamar State College Port Arthur’s softball team dropped two to Alvin Community College, 5-3 and 9-4, in NJCAA Region XIV play on Friday afternoon.

The Seahawks fall to 12-22 for the season and 5-11 in conference play, while the Dolphins improved to 9-22 overall and 5-9 in league action.

Sophomore Morgan Chavarria and freshman Olivia Rivera each collected a double against the Dolphins in Game 1, but it wasn’t enough as Alvin CC limited the Hawks to just four hits overall.

The Seahawks led the game 1-0 after the top half of the second inning but Alvin responded with one run in the bottom of the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to put the Hawks behind 5-1. LSCPA made a game of it in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs on Chavarria’s late-game double. Unfortunately, Chavarria overran second base and was tagged for the third out of the inning on that same play.

Sophomore Briana White worked three innings before Alvin chased her from the mound with four runs, three earned, on seven hits. Sophomore reliever Kelsey Stewart came on to finish the game, allowing five hits for one earned runs, collecting two strikeouts.

The Seahawks’ bats came alive in the second game with White hitting a home run, sophomore Julie French adding a triple and Chavarria and freshman Lily Renteria each collecting two hits. A five-run first inning for Alvin was too much to overcome, though, as three Seahawks pitchers worked unsuccessfully to reel in the Dolphins’ offense.

The Hawks scattered 11 hits but fell behind 5-0 after the first. LSCPA clawed back to close the gap to 5-2 after the third but Alvin answered with three in the fourth to put the game away for good.

Chavarria and White each had a run batted in, while Marisol Ynfante collected two RBIs. Chavarria was especially busy with a stolen base, a sacrifice fly, and was hit by a pitch to reach base.

Jessica Saenz worked three innings on the mound for the Seahawks, allowing three earned runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk. Kelsey Stewart worked one inning in relief, allowing four hits for five runs, though only one of those runs was earned. White finished out the work on the hill, allowing just two hits and one earned run over two innings.
