Elwood Kettler, a former Nederland football coach who was the quarterback on Bear Bryant’s “Junction Boys” team at Texas A&M, died Tuesday at his home in Livingston. He was 85.

Kettler was an assistant coach on Nederland’s 1957 state championship team and became head coach at age 27 in 1960. The next year, he joined Bryant’s staff at Alabama.

A 2002 ESPN movie titled “The Junction Boys” was based on Bryant’s first summer camp as head coach at A&M in Junction. Kettler returned to the high school ranks after coaching at Alabama and had three sons play quarterback for him at Texas City High School.
