Service held for former WOS baseball coach Anderson

A memorial service was held Saturday for former West Orange-Stark baseball coach and hall-of-famer Ronnie Anderson.

Anderson, 82, died Monday. After beginning his career at Orangefield in 1959, he coached the former West Orange High School and led the Chiefs to a championship playoff in 1974, according to his obituary. The 1991 West Orange-Stark Mustangs went to the 4A state semifinals, losing to West Mesquite 8-7.

Some of the players he coached include former University of Texas and New York Yankees shortstop Andre Robertson, former Tulane catcher James Long and former TCU catcher Jerry Callier.

The Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association placed Anderson in its Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Southeast Texas Coaches Association welcomed him into its Hall of Honor in 2013.

Anderson left behind a son, two stepsons, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, a brother and brother-in-law.
