Filing begins for Groves, PN and PNGISD seats

Filing for seats on Groves and Port Neches city councils as well as for Port Neches-Groves Independent School District board of trustees begins on Monday.

In Groves, the Ward 1 and Ward 3 seats are up for grabs. The Ward 1 seat is currently held by Jim Rasa, who told The News he plans to file for reelection. The Ward 3 seat is held by Sidney Badon. Badon said he will also file for reelection.

To be eligible to file for a seat on Groves council one must be a U.S. citizen, a qualified elector of the State of Texas and must have resided within the corporate limits of the city for six months preceding the date of election for which he or she is a candidate.

The cost to file is $25 and filing can be done at Groves City Hall, 3947 Lincoln Ave.

Filing dates are form 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, until Aug. 22.

The Place 3 and Place 5 seats for Port Neches City Council are also up for grabs and both incumbents have said they will file for reelection.

The Place 3 seat is held by John Davenport who was first elected in 2011 while the Place 5 seat is held by Julie Gauthier who is in her second term.

Candidates can file their application with the Port Neches city secretary’s office no earlier than 8 a.m., Monday and no later than 5 p.m., Aug. 21.

Candidates can file their application with the city secretary’s office, located within City Hall, 1005 Merriman St., Port Neches, Texas 77651.

The filling fee is $100; in lieu of the filling fee, a petition signed by a minimum number of 25 qualified voters from the city may be submitted.

Persons wishing to file must be a U.S. citizen and qualified elector of the State of Texas and have resided in the city continuously for 12 months immediately preceding the election.

The Place 6 and Place 7 seats on PNGISD board of trustees are up for election. Darren McCutcheon, the Place 7 incumbent, said he would file for reelection. He is completing his fifth term.

Rusty Brittain, the Place 6 incumbent, was unavailable for comment as of Friday afternoon.

The physical address for filing applications in person for a place on the ballot is Port Neches-Groves ISD Administration,620 Ave. C, Port Neches, Texas 77651.

Office hours through Friday are: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, closed Friday.

After next Friday the hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 21, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To be eligible to be a candidate for school board a person must be: a US citizen, 18 years of age or older on the first day of theme to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment, have not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote, have not been finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities, a resident of Texas and the district for the period of time described as — continuously in the state for 12 months and in the district for 6 months, and be registered to vote/qualified voter.

The general election date is Nov. 7.
