“It’s not just for crunchy mommas,” Melissa Freer, owner, said.

Freer said the store also carries apothecary and herbal remedies, reusable lunch boxes and other items that appeal to a variety of customers.

The term “crunchy momma” is slang for moms who do natural parenting — breastfeeding, eco-friendly, cloth diapers, according to store manager Kayla Vidrine.

The store hosted a ribbon cutting recently where Yesenia Bermudes, who is pregnant with her third child, stopped by for items for the new baby.

“I’m a cloth diaper, breastfeeding mom,” Bermudes said. “I love to buy local instead of on Amazon and help small businesses. I’m doing my baby registry now.”

Bernudes, of Port Arthur, went to cloth diapers when her second child was a baby because he had an allergic reaction to disposable diapers.

Switching to cloth diapers was easy, she said, and it is much cheaper than using disposable.

Amber O’Neal, owner of “Wearing Ruby,” manufactures and sells her baby slings at Crunchy Momma. Her business started out of necessity. Her oldest daughter, Ruby, has acid reflux and didn’t want to be put down.

“I also have shoes, dolls and will introduce sun hats and baby bonnets,” O’Neal said.

The tag line for “Wearing Ruby” is: “Wear your children close to your hearts because they are your most precious jewel.”

The baby slings are compliant with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act and O’Neal is a member of the Baby Carrier Industry Alliance.
