Port Neches-Groves’ historic championship run drew national attention, and the Indians are still recognized across the country as one of the best high school baseball teams.
PNG remained No. 12 in the final CBS MaxPreps Xcellent 50 baseball rankings, which were released Tuesday. PNG (34-8-2) splashed into the poll last week at that position after winning the 5A state championship and is the highest-ranked Texas team in the poll, one spot ahead of 6A champion Deer Park (35-8-1).
The poll was finalized after No. 10 Saline, Mich. (38-3) and No. 11 Indianapolis Central (29-0) finished their state tournaments.
The top 31 teams in the poll remained unchanged. Shawnee, Okla. (40-0) finished No. 1, with Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Archbishop McCarthy (29-2) second and Upper Marlboro, Md., Riverdale Baptist third.
PNG beat current No. 23 Frisco Wakeland (38-5-1) in the state semifinals and current No. 43 Grapevine (33-13) for the championship two weekends ago. Grapevine was the defending 5A champion.
