Woman with kids, 18 and 9, arrested with 42 pounds of pot

A traffic stop of a reportedly suspicious vehicle led to the recovering of 42 pounds of marijuana and the arrest of a Rio Grande City woman.

Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit made the traffic stop around 4 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 10 near Smith Road. The vehicle was being driven by Benina Villarreal, 38, of Rio Grande City, Texas. She had her 18-year-old daughter and her 9-year-old son as passengers, according to a press release from the JCSO.

Sheriff’s deputies discovered 17 bundles, or 42 pounds, of marijuana concealed in panels of a vehicle with an estimated at $84,000.

While speaking to Villarreal, deputies became suspicious and requested consent to search her vehicle. Consent was reportedly given and deputies discovered 17 bundles, or 42 pounds, of marijuana concealed in panels. The street value is estimated at $84,000.

Villarreal was booked into the Jefferson County jail on the charge of possession of marijuana and the bond was set at $25,000. The car and the child were released to the 18-year-old daughter.
