On a day when howling winds sent scores soaring, Braden Bailey overcame two double bogeys to shoot a 75 and help Baylor advance to the match-play portion of the NCAA Golf Championships in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Bailey’s 75 was Baylor’s second low score behind Garrett May’s 73. Hunter Shattuck shot 77, Cooper Dossey had 79 and Matthew Perrine carded an 80 as the Bears stumbled to a 16-over-par 296 to finish plus seven for 72 holes.

Baylor wound up tying UNLV for seventh place, with both teams claiming the final spots in match play by two strokes over LSU. The Bears will play No. 2 seed Oklahoma in the match play quarterfinals Tuesday morning.

Others in the top eight include No. 1 Vanderbilt (minus 13), No. 3 Illinois (plus 2), No. 4 Oklahoma State (plus 3), No 5. Oregon (plus 6) and No. 6 Southern Cal (plus 6). Vanderbilt was the only team in the field to finish under par.

Oklahoma was even par.

Braden Thornberry of Mississippi won the tournament medalist trophy, shooting a final round 71 to finish with an 11-under 277. Mason Overstreet of Arkansas was second at 281. Third-round leader Scottie Scheffler of Texas skied to a 78 and finished tied for third at 282.

Bailey made double bogey on his second hole of the day and took a second double at his sixth hole to go four over. With Baylor in danger of not making the top eight, he played the final 12 holes in one under par.

All four quarterfinal matches will be televised by the Golf Channel, with coverage starting at 10 a.m. The Golf Channel will also televise the afternoon semifinals between the four surviving teams.
