CROSBY — A wild pitch in the fifth inning allowed Manvel to score the go-ahead run Friday, and the Mavericks evened the 5A Region III area series with Port Neches-Groves, taking a 2-1 victory.
The defeat ended a 17-game winning streak for the Indians, dating back to the start of District 22-5A play. The Indians are district champions for the third year in a row.
Game 3 is set for 7 tonight. The winner will take on Barbers Hill, which swept Santa Fe 8-0 and 2-0.
Cameron Stansberry got the Indians (25-6-2) on the board with a two-out single in the second inning. Manvel didn’t tie the game until the fourth, when Damon Fernandez’s triple sent home a run.
On the mound, Fernandez held PNG to three hits and struck out nine in a complete-game win. Brandon Morse allowed five Manvel hits and delivered two punchouts in six innings.
Austin Bost, Logan LeJeune and Stansberry had the hits for PNG.
