PORT NECHES — Ball, ball, ball, ball, run.

That was the sequence of Austin Bost’s at-bat when he walked to give Port Neches-Groves a lead a Humble in the fifth inning. That would be the last time anyone reached base in the game Friday.

The Indians won 2-1 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three 5A bi-district series. They’ll go for the series win today, as the series resumes in Humble starting with Game 2 at 11 a.m.

Two pitches into the sixth inning, Brandon Petix took the mound for Josh Hranicky and proceeded to toss strikes on three of his first four pitches. Petix induced two groundouts and struck out the side in order in the seventh inning.

Hranicky, who allowed three hits struck out seven and held Humble to one run on three hits in five innings. The run, which Humble scored in the fourth inning, was unearned.

PNG (23-5-2) earned both of its runs. Jacob Vaughan singled with two outs to drive in a run in the second innings. Humble knotted the game at 1-1 in the fourth, but Vaughan broke the tie with the forced walk in the fifth.

Trevor Martin had the only other hit for the Indians.

Anthony Villareal struck out three and allowed two earned runs on two hits in 4 1/3 innings for the Eagles. Nate Johnson threw a hitless 1 2/3 innings.
