Fobbs’ work with youth commended

Growing up, many of us played Little League baseball and softball year in and year out. We couldn’t wait for the weekend during baseball season so we could play our next game. Not to mention summer where everyday was ripe for another pickup game.
Although we probably didn’t know it at the time, Little League baseball taught us teamwork, discipline, compassion and how to handle adversity. It helped us to develop self-confidence and leadership skills.
But not many Little League organizations can find the right people willing to give their time to help children learn these skills. Many coaches and league officials are in it for their own children then, once they have moved on, so do the parents.
Not many stay, and put in the time to help all children. However, the Port Arthur American Little League does have one of those in its midst. Someone, who has devoted himself to teaching children the skills mentioned above through baseball.
Last Tuesday night at the Port Arthur City Council meeting, Minister Dwight Fobbs, President of Port Arthur American Little League was honored for his selfless giving of himself to help the youth of today.
Port Arthur Mayor, Derrick Freeman, presented Mr. Fobbs with a Proclamation from the City of Port Arthur Mayor’s Office, proclaiming Feb. 28 as “Minister Dwight Fobbs Day.” Thanking him for his sincere dedication to our youth.
But as many do many non-profit organizations, The Port Arthur American Little League struggles with upkeep of their fields. Some are in need of new fences, attendance bleachers, dugouts and field repair. And yes, there is only so much one person can do.
Even though Mr. Fobbs, spends countless hours transporting players to games, cooking chili for game night, mops concession stand floors and maintains the baseball field, there is still help needed.
If you would like to give of your time, to help Mr. Fobbs change the lives of our area youth, he can be contacted at 409-549-8800.
We commend you, Dwight Fobbs, for fostering the objectives of the league, helping to develop leadership skills in our youth that will help them to become successful individuals. Congratulations on an honor well deserved.
