The Nederland ISD board will hold a special meeting Monday evening to discuss and vote on a new head football coach and athletic director.

The board will meet in a closed session to “discuss personnel matters including employment of Athletic Director/Head Coach position.” The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the NISD Administration Building, 220 17th St.

An open session will immediately follow in which the board will take action on the vacancy.

There is a possibility the positions could become separate, which is uncommon among one-high school districts in Southeast Texas. Boys basketball coach Brian English is among the 10 candidates announced last week for the athletic director role, with the rest of the potentials currently coaching football.

Nederland offensive coordinator Monte Barrow is among the candidates. He’s been on the football staff there since Larry Neumann, who retired as head coach and AD last month, was hired in 1993.

Other candidates include Port Arthur Memorial special teams coordinator and offensive line coach Phillip Mattingly, Electra coach Todd Doughty, Central assistant coach Jeff Nelson, Deer Park offensive coordinator Nolan Patterson, Diboll OC Cris Stump, Katy Cinco Ranch defensive coordinator Chad Simmons, St. Petersburg (Fla.) Gibbs head coach Jonathon Thompson and Norwalk (Ohio) head coach Chris MacFarland.
