Titans earn top seed in flip

Port Arthur Memorial won a coin flip over Central to earn the top seed from District 22-5A in the UIL’s 5A boys basketball playoffs, which begin this coming Tuesday.

The two teams earned a share of the district championship Tuesday night, finishing the regular season with 13-1 district records. Central won the first head-to-head meeting in Port Arthur, while Memorial returned the favor in Beaumont.

Memorial (25-5) will face Dayton at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lee College in Baytown. The time depends on how many games are played that night there.

Nederland (26-8) finished tied for third with Ozen, but the two teams agreed without a coin toss that Ozen would take the third seed and Nederland the fourth. Nederland will take on Humble at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Goose Creek Memorial High in Baytown. Ozen will play Porter at East Chambers High at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Sabine Pass earned the fourth and final seed out of 24-2A and will play Pineywoods Community Academy at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Jasper.

In 22-4A, West Orange-Stark (10-15) and Bridge City (15-11) will play for the third seed at 7 p.m. Friday at Orangefield High. Silsbee and Little Cypress-Mauriceville are the top two seeds.
