Police: Intoxicated woman with child in car, flees, crashes car

BEAUMONT — Beaumont Police say a woman who was passed out in her vehicle with her child in her lap woke up, fled from officers and crashed into a concrete divider shortly after midnight Monday.

An officer with Beaumont Police Department was patrolling in the area of Lucas near Eastex Freeway and saw a vehicle stopped in the roadway. He approached and saw a small child in the arms of an unconscious woman, according to a press release from BPD.

The officer tried to speak with the woman who woke up and sped off. She went straight on laurel, jumped the curb, went across several lanes of the interstate traffic and crashed into the concrete interstate barrier.

Officers were able to separate the mother and child and placed the mother in custody.

She was identified as Joinae Powell, 25, of Beaumont. She was sent to a hospital and after being cleared medically was sent to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility where she was booked in for evading detention with a motor vehicle and DWI with a child passenger.
