BEAUMONT – With the majority of the Week 9 vote, Lamar volleyball’s Chelsea Grant was voted as the D-I Women’s Volleyball HERO of the Week after dominating her competition a week ago, including a career-best 28-kill match against McNeese State, the organization announced Friday afternoon.
The award is given to the athlete who garners the most votes at HEROSports.com’s site.
Grant, a native of Killeen, recorded a staggering 62 kills on the week, which averaged out to a 5.64 kills per set. Her tremendous mark jumped her to the top of the Southland Conference’s leaderboard. Her 3.70 average took over the top spot with a slim lead over HBU’s Bailey Banks.
She put away 28 kills against McNeese, which tied for the fourth-highest mark in school history for kills in a single match. She finished with a .368 attack percentage in the match.
Including all three matches (McNeese, Nicholls State and Abilene Christian), she pounded down more than five kills a set in each match and tallied 6.3 against Nicholls – on a .457 attack percentage. Against ACU at home, she put up 15 kills to tie her career-best for kills in a three-set match, which she later bested at Nicholls (18).
Lamar returns to the floor Saturday at 1 p.m. against in-state rival Sam Houston State at McDonald Gym, and then again on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Houston Baptist.
