“The criminal investigations division is continuing to look at the facts surrounding the case,” according to a press release from PAPD. “Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Marc DeRouen is conducting an inquest into the death.”

PAPD Sgt. Scott Gaspard said Carney was arrested at the time of the wreck after he was treated and released from the hospital.

A search warrant was obtained to draw blood from the suspect and police are awaiting results.

The fatal wreck happened shortly after noon Tuesday at Memorial Boulevard and 39th Street. The victim was stopped at the red light headed south when a Dodge truck crashed into his Jeep. The impact caused the Jeep to burst into flames.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and police believe there may have been ammunition inside the Jeep.

The collision led to the closure of the north and south bound portions of the highway as first responders worked the crash.
