Motorcycle cop struck during funeral procession

A former Port Arthur Police Officer currently working as a Rose City deputy marshal was struck by a car while working a funeral procession in Port Arthur on Thursday.

Doug Klinkhammer and another motorcycle officer were working the procession around 12:45 p.m. Sept. 15 and were at the intersection of FM 365 and Ninth Avenue when the crash occurred, according to information fro the Texas department of Public Safety.

The first motorcycle activated emergency lights and pulled into the intersection to stop traffic for the funeral procession. With traffic stopped, the second motorcycle, with emergency lights activated, entered the intersection and was struck by a Honda Civic that failed to yield right of way.

As the car struck the motorcycle, the officer was ejected and rolled over the hood of the car.

The driver of the Honda, Salma Mehio, 85, of Nederland, was sent by ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont. She was alert and was there for observation.

Klinkhammer was also sent to St. Elizabeth Hospital and was alert and undergoing examinations to determine the extent of his injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.
