One way Port Arthur ISD board member Joseph Guillory gives back to the community is through coaching youth football.
Guillory is soliciting applications for the Junior Bees football program. The deadline to register is Saturday.
“As a coach and mentor, it gives me an opportunity to reach the parents and kids where they are,” said Guillory, who played center for the Lincoln High Bumblebees. “Building a relationship with the community is key to success in our classroom. We need more parental involvement, but we also need to get more involved as a community.”
The Junior Bees are a Pop Warner Football program that competes in flag, Mighty Mite, Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee football. Head coaches include Brad Coleman, Antoine Freeman and LaDarius Heard.
“I’ve always had a soft spot for kids,” Guillory said. “I want to see a better generation of kids from Port Arthur. These children are awesome and they, too, will appreciate the time we take with them. I want to thank all the parents for entrusting me with your children and I commend you on a job well done thus far.”
Guillory said the Bees are building character and developing leadership skills, encouraging responsibilities, stressing teamwork, demanding respect and fostering sportsmanship while making new friends.
Practices are held at the old Franklin School on Thomas Boulevard and Mobile Avenue from 6-8 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with games Saturday mornings at locations to be announced.
For more information on registration, call Guillory at 281-804-0820.
