PORT NECHES — Barbara Comeaux does not like the spotlight shining on her.
The longtime Port Neches-Groves volleyball coach will not have a choice next Thursday. Comeaux will be inducted into the Texas Girls Coaches Association at its awards banquet in Arlington.
Comeaux found out about the honor in February but did not tell too many people. It took PNG soccer coach Aimee Bates to alert the media on Wednesday for the public to find out.
“I am humbled,” Comeaux said. “When the guy called to tell me about it I told him I thought you had to be retired or dead.”
Comeaux is neither. She has coached at PNG since 1971 and has won three state championships through the years. The Rock-A-Noos won in 1972, 1979 and 1981. PNG lost in the finals in 1980.
The Rock-A-Noos have won 1,179 matches in her career, the most in state high school history and PNG has made the playoffs in 42 of 45 seasons. Comeaux’s teams have won 29 district championships.
The Rock-A-Noos have made the playoffs 33 straight seasons.
“This honor has made me reflect,” Comeaux said. “It has me looking back on the ride. I have been very fortunate here at PNG. We have had a lot of great kids and parents who believe in what we are trying to do. I wouldn’t still be here if I didn’t have the drive to meet the challenges.”
