A Port Arthur police officer is on paid administrative leave following the shooting death of an aggravated robbery suspect Thursday night.

The deceased has been identified by police as John Michael Briscoe, 52, of Port Arthur.

Port Arthur Police Maj. Raymond Clark said the suspect entered Walgreens at the corner of Ninth Avenue and FM 365 around 9:20 p.m. June 9 and robbed a clerk. An officer saw the suspect exit the store as the call of the robbery went out.

“The officer ran after him to the rear, or east of the store and gave pursuit,’ Clark said. “The suspect turned around and presented a weapon and shots were fired. The suspect was shot.”

Clark said it is normal procedure for an officer involved in a shooting to be placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

The district attorney’s office is leading the investigation.

Gary Reaves with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office confirmed they are working on the case, adding the DA’s office investigates every officer involved shooting in the county.

Representatives of the DA’s office were on scene Thursday night, Clark said.
