BEAUMONT — The NFL Draft ended without a Lamar player being selected, but one Cardinal has a contract in tow.
Offensive lineman Cody Elenz signed a free-agent deal with Atlanta on Saturday. He could have a Lamar teammate with him in preseason camp, as wide receiver Reggie Begelton received calls to try out for the Falcons and the Oakland Raiders.
Elenz transferred to Lamar from Idaho and helped the offensive line lead the nation in pass protection, surrendering less than 0.5 sack per game. Elenz was named first-team All-Southland Conference.
Begelton is Lamar’s all-time leader in receptions (227) and receiving yards (2,435). He is second in program history in touchdown receptions with 20, just one behind Mark Roberts.
Former Lamar deep snapper Brent Nicholson has fielded calls from several teams, but has not received an offer or tryout invitation.
