1923 ~ 2016

Louis was born December 28, 1923, in New Iberia to the late Felix Deslatte  and Clarise Broussard Deslatte, and was one of twelve children. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at his residence with his family.

Mr. Deslatte moved to Port Arthur in 1925 and graduated from Thomas Jefferson in 1941. He joined the Army Air Force in 1942, and served as an aerial engineer staff sergeant on a B-24 crew of the 781st Bombardment Squadron, 465th Bomb Group, Pantanella Army Air Base in Italy. He was shot down over Poland and captured by the Germans on his 28th mission. As a WW II POW, he survived the ninety day, 600 mile Death March of Stalag Luft IV. Upon his discharge he worked at Texaco refinery as a pipefitter and foreman for 40 years. He lived in Port Arthur for 50 years and Nederland for 20 years with stops in Diboll, Lufkin, Tomball and the last three years in Montgomery, with son, Thomas and wife Kristy and her mother Margaret Ficker, where he loved to maintain the lawn on his professional zero radius mower. He coached and managed Little League teams of his two sons and was devoted to his daughter from first marriage to Eunice, enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling and playing “friendly” games of bouree, poker and dominoes.

Survivors include his sister, Marie Blanchard, two sons, Michael Wayne and wife Julia, Thomas Joseph and wife Kristy. Four grandchildren, Amanda Deslatte, Rebekah O’Neal and husband Blake, Jeremy Deslatte and Allen Honish, Jr. and wife Mandie, two great grandchildren, Lorelai and Wolf. Brother in law V.R. Rayburn and wife Sara and sister in law Marcelene Degeyter and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter Katherine Ann, that he loved and missed greatly, wife Joyce, the love of his life, his brothers, Lawless, Edwin, Luke, Felix, Jr., Lee, Claude and George Deslatte; his sister’s, Philomene LeBlanc, Leila Hebert (whom raised him as a child), Valerie Guillot.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2016, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm., at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, in Beaumont, with a graveside service to follow, in Forest Lawn Memorial Park and Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the “Wounded Warriors”.
