Jury duty scam alert

The Jefferson County District Clerk’s Office is warning citizens of a scam in which the scammer is making calls that appear to come from county officials reporting that a person has missed jury duty and threatening arrest if they do not pay a fine.
The caller directs the person to purchase a prepaid debit card and provide card information with a return phone call. The amount requested is normally between $900 and $1,200.
Although it is a violation of law to fail to appear, the Jefferson County District Clerk’s staff does not contact individuals who fail to appear by telephone, and will never request credit or debit card information.
