Bond is set at $300,000 for a man who reportedly touched two young girls inappropriately and exposed himself to a teenager at Academy Sports and Outdoors late last week.

Port Arthur Police were called to Academy, 8453 Memorial Blvd. around 5:20 p.m. Friday in reference to a fight. Once there they learned a man suspected of inappropriately touching two girls and exposed himself to an employee was detained by parents, customers and employees at the store.

The suspect was identified as David Anthony Humphries, 33, a transient, Port Arthur Police Maj. Raymond Clark said.

“There were multiple incidents,” Clark said.

A five-year-old was at the store with her father when she suddenly said she wanted to leave because a man in a black jacket was touching her inappropriately. He asked her to point the man out and he and an employee began walking toward the man, Clark said.

In another area of the store a 9-year-old girl told her father she was touched inappropriately by a man.

“Both parents were in close proximity to their children when the incidents occurred,” he said.

Also at the store a 16-year-old female employee in the apparel department was using the computer when a white male in a black jacket was nearby. She didn’t pay much attention. When she looked up he was exposing himself while masturbating. The teen looked down, not knowing what to do. When she looked back up he was gone.

When the employee and manager went to look for the suspect they heard a female yell, “stop him” as the suspect attempted to leave the store, he said.

“They heard a commotion at the front of the store and went to see what exactly was going on,” Clark said. “Employees, parents and customers were detaining the suspect. It was at this point the police were called. All of the parents of the children and the employee positively identified the suspect.”

Humphries was arrested and charged with two counts of indecency with a child and one charge of public lewdness/indecent exposure.

“No matter how close your child is to you there are those individuals who prey upon the and can act so quick in close proximity. It requires you to be on guard at a heightened state around your children and grandchildren,” he said.
