Hot bats power PN-G in district softball opener

BAYTOWN — The Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians started the District 22-5A softball campaign off with a bang Tuesday against Baytown Lee.
PN-G thumped Lee 16-0 in five innings to improve to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in the league standings.
Kaitlyn Boudreaux continued to swing a hot bat by going 1 for 1 with three RBI, a homer, three runs, a stolen base and two walks.
Avery Hooks was 2 for 4 with two triples, a RBI and two runs and Marlee Barnett was 1 for 1 with a double, a run scored an a RBI. Callie Jourdan was 2 for 4 with two runs and two stolen bases, Bailey Crorey had three walks, three runs and a stolen base and Bayja Newby was 2 for 3 with two RBI, two doubles and three runs.
Britni Hunt pitched all five innings and struck out 13 batters and allowed no hits. The only base runner reached on a catcher interference call and was later picked off at third.
The Lady Indians are home to face Atascocita at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

PA MEMORIAL 1, DEER PARK 0
DEER PARK — The Port Arthur Memorial Titans are back in the playoff race.
The Titans edged Deer Park 1-0 Tuesday behind a goal from Raul Estupinan. He scored with 8:37 left in the first half.
Deer Park outshot Memorial 19-8, but Titans keeper Arturo Villarreal came up with 16 saves.
Kevin Vazquez was credited for stellar play for Memorial (2-3-1).
The Titans play Baytown Sterling at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Titans Stadium on Senior Night.
CENTRAL 1, NEDERLAND 0
BEAUMONT — Nederland soccer coach Torrey Gomez tries to tell his team to leave it all on the field.
“This is the first game in a long time I think that they stepped off the field with regrets,” Gomez said after his team lost 1-0 to Central Tuesday. “They played afraid to lose tonight and when you do that, it usually happens.”
Nederland is now 8-5-5 overall and 5-2-2 in the District 22-5A standings heading into Friday’s home match against Port Neches-Groves. The Indians tied Lumberton 1-1 Tuesday. Preston Riggs scored the lone Indians goal.
GIRLS SOCCER
NEDERLAND 13, CENTRAL 0
NEDERLAND — The Nederland Lady Bulldogs remained close to the District 22-5A lead Tuesday with a 13-0 blanking of Central.
Madison Ledet scored three goals for Nederland (13-3-1, 8-1-1) and Meg Sheppard and Madison Diaz each scored twice. Emma Roccaforte, Phoebe Short, Tatum Kieschnick, Kennedy Kieschnick, Lauren Hughes and Kassidy Giroir all scored a goal.
Nederland hits the road Friday to face Port Neches-Groves at 7 p.m.
LUMBERTON 2, PORT NECHES-GROVES 0
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton Lady Raiders once again proved to be the class of District 22-5A.
Lumberton took down Port Neches-Groves 2-0 Tuesday. The Lady Raiders scored both goals in the first half and led the shots on goal 23-14.
PN-G coach Aimee Bates said two Lady Indians (11-6-2, 7-3-1) shots in the second half hit the crossbar.
“It was a physical match but I thought we held our own against a great team,” Bates said.
PN-G faces Nederland at 7 p.m. Friday at The Reservation.
