LUFKIN — Lamar State College-Port Arthur needed an answer to stop a charging Angelina College on Saturday afternoon. Freddie Williams Jr. was almost it.

Williams scored 23 points, all in the second half, but it still wasn’t enough to give the Seahawks a season-finale win as the Roadrunners took a 93-87 victory.

As the NJCAA Region XIV South Zone champion and owner of the No. 2 seed entering next week’s regional tournament, the Seahawks really had nothing to lose but the game Saturday. Still, LSCPA battled in the face of a 14-point first-half deficit, eventually evening the game five minutes into the second half.

The Hawks would eventually push out to a seven-point advantage in the second half, sparked by Williams’ resurgence.

Williams added 10 rebounds to complete his double-double performance, while Nederland sophomore Colton Weisbrod put up 22 points with 14 rebounds in the game.

Jordon Harris added 17 points with six rebounds for the Seahawks, while Mambi Diawara had 13 points and Christian Albright hit for 10 points with three assists.

As the No. 2 seed in the upcoming regional tournament, the Seahawks have earned a first-round bye on Tuesday. Thursday, LSCPA will play at 6 p.m. at the tourney site, Angelina College, with the opponent determined by Tuesday’s first-round outcomes.
