Two 18-year-old from Port Neches are safe after Jefferson County deputies rescued them from a marsh after their mud boat began to take on water.

JSCO Chief Deputy Ron Hobbs said the two were testing a 15-foot mud boat in the marsh near the old Gulf States Utilities plant on the Neches River when their engine failed Tuesday night.

When the cold front moved in, strong north winds pushed them to the bank but high waves caused the boat to begin taking on water.

They called 911 after several hours. Deputies from the Marine Unit responded from Sabine Pass and were able to receive the Port Neches men from the marsh around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The men were cold but uninjured. The boat was left at the scene due to poor weather conditions.
