PREP ROUNDUP: Jones’ 35 powers Sharks in 2A opener

KIRBYVILLE — Jamyus Jones was feeling it.

One of Sabine Pass’ standout sophomores, Jones hit 13 of 25 from the field and 6 of 10 free throws to finish with a game-high 35 points in the Sharks’ 75-64 win over Zavalla in a 2A Region III bi-district contest.

Daniel Sam followed up with 19 points and Brandon Miller had 12 for Sabine Pass (16-7), which will face Tenaha or New Summerfield in the area round. The Sharks led 33-26 at halftime.

MHS EDGES SILSBEE TO START BASEBALL SEASON

SILSBEE — The Port Arthur Memorial Titans started 2016 off with a big win over the Silsbee Tigers.

Memorial (1-0) downed Silsbee 3-2 behind four strong innings on the mound from Devuan Anderson. Anderson gave up two hits and one earned run with four strikeouts and one walk.

Devin Cruz Lugo pitched the final three innings and allowed one hit and no runs with seven strikeouts.

Ramiro Sanchez went 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs, Lugo was 1 for 1 with two walks and Anderson was 1 for 2 with a run. J.P. Fernandez was 1 for 2 with a walk and a stolen base and Carlos Granados and Roberto Collazo each had a hit.

Memorial plays at the Spring Branch ISD tournament starting Thursday.

NHS ANNOUNCES SOCCER CHANGE

Nederland’s girls soccer matches against Vidor, originally scheduled for Tuesday, have been moved to tonight at Bulldog Stadium.

The junior varsity game is still scheduled for 5 p.m., with the varsity game at 7.
