  • The Westside Neighborhood Association will hold its first meeting of the new year at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Westside Development Center, 601 W. the Rev. Dr. Ransom Howard St. The activity calendar for 2016 will be planned.
  • The Port Arthur Citizen Drug Task Force will hold a parent forum at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Arreader P. Guidry Administration Building, 4801 Ninth Ave. in Port Arthur. Parents are invited to ask a panel of local leaders questions about parenting.
  • The Nederland Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Bureau will hold a ribbon cutting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Southeast Texas Ear Nose and Throat, 8333 Ninth Ave. Ste. J, Port Arthur.
  • Hebert Public Library “Beginner Spanish” class on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 10 a.m. at 2025 Merriman St. in Port Neches. Just for fun — basic conversational Spanish. No previous knowledge of Spanish needed. Come exercise your brain, laugh, and learn. Meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a total of six weeks. (This is the second week of the course, but there is a handout of last week’s material.)
  • Hebert Public Library, “Spanish Conversation” class on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 11 a.m. at 2025 Merriman St. in Port Neches. Know some Spanish and want to practice speaking with others? Although the class was designed for “graduates” of the library’s recent Beginner Spanish class, our weekly Spanish conversation get-together is open to anyone.
  • Triangle Photo Group workshop led by Ian Wright from Sulphur, La. The workshop will focus on High-Key and Low-key techniques in a lighted studio setting at the Groves Public Library on Wednesday, January 20 from 5:45-8 p.m. The workshop is $10.   • Hebert Public Library, Book-a-Librarian session on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 11 a.m., at 2025 Merriman St. in Port Neches. You have a librarian’s undivided attention for an hour. Need help downloading photos from your phone? Want to create a table in Word? You name it, we will try to assist. Please call 722-4554 to reserve the hour — and it might help to know in advance what you wish to accomplish.

  • Hebert Public Library, “Learn Chess” class on Thursday, Jan. 21, 1 p.m. at 2025 Merriman St. in Port Neches.It’s never too late to learn the most popular game in the world: chess! We will cover the basic rules and piece movements. Armed with that knowledge, patrons are ready to join the “Play Chess” sessions at the library. Open to all ages.

  • Lawrence Ingram and the Memorial High School Choir will present the second annual “Motown and More” at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at the PAISD Performing Arts Center, 1500 Lakeshore Drive. Tickets will be on sale at Men’s Collection located in Central Mall and at Memorial High School. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10, $15 at the door or $20 for VIP tickets.
  • Ladyz of Love Civic and Social Group will have a meet and greet the Jefferson County candidates reception from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Department Club, 1924 Lakeshore Drive. Chili and drinks will be served.
  • Gulf Coast Soccer registration for boys and girls ages 3 to 18 for the spring 2016 season will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Central Mall in front.   • Hebert Public Library, Teens in grades 6 through 12 are invited to the library for a bookend-designing craft night Saturday January 23rd from 6-7:30 p.m. There will also be snacks and a “bookfacing contest” (modeling your face in a book cover to create an illusion).

  • The Port Arthur Teachers Federal Credit Union will hold its 63nd Annual Meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, at the Holiday Inn Park Central in Port Arthur. Cindy Drummond, President, has announced that on the agenda is the election of officers and presentation of the 2015 financial report. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded.
